Betty Jane McAdoo Merritt, 88, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. She was born on April 6, 1924, in Texarkana, Texas, to Harvey C. McAdoo and Annie Laurie Rehkopf McAdoo. She graduated from Texarkana High School. She lived much of her adult life in Camden, Ark., where she was secretary/office manager for Gross and Janes Company for many years. She also worked for the Ouchita County, Ark., Department of Human Services. She was a longtime member of the Fairview United Methodist Church of Camden. After moving to Tupelo in 1996 to be near her son and his family, she was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. She was a quiet, moving force who enjoyed gardening, working puzzles and caring for her family.

A service celebrating her life will be held Saturday in Camden, Ark. There will be no local visitation or services. Holland Funeral Directors, Tupelo Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her son, Steve Merritt (Jill) of Tupelo; and two granddaughters, Leslie Erin and Whitney Leanne.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake Merritt, on Dec. 3, 2006; her parents; a son, Lloyd C. Merritt, on July 27, 1976; and five siblings.

Memorials may be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, P.O. Box 2177, Tupelo, MS 38803; or to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 1400 Clayton Ave., Tupelo, MS 38804.
