John Merritt, 83, of Troy, one of the oldest and best known residents of this section, died at 7 a.m. Saturday at the home of his son, Will Merritt, in Stephens where he had been visiting for the past two weeks. Mr. Merritt suffered a paralytic stroke about two years ago, from which he never recovered, his last illness however only extending over the past week. Funeral services and burial were held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Troy with Rev. W. R. Burke, pastor of the Methodist church of Ogemaw and Buena Vista officiating. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Cecil Pinkston of Smackover, Mrs. Sam Roberson of Troy, Mrs. Robert Johnson of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Shannon of Troy, Sherrod Merritt of Troy and Will Merritt of this city.
