Elton Eugene Hughes, 81, of Searcy passed away Sunday, July 20, 2014 at his home. He was born December 27, 1932 in Letona, Arkansas to the late Martin and Lottie Ward Hughes.
He was married to Jewell Laverne Whisnant on October 1, 1951.
Elton pastored 50 years for the Church of the Nazarene and filled in at other churches the following years.
Elton also owned and operated Hughes Sewing Center where he sold and worked on sewing machines and vacuum cleaners.
Elton grew up at Pickens Chapel. He was called to preach as a young boy. He attended Bethany Nazarene College.
In addition to his parents, Elton was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Junior Hughes and Carl Augusta Hughes both were from Searcy; and one niece, Rebecca Diane Hughes Kinman of Houston.
Elton is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jewell Laverne Hughes of Searcy; two nieces, Peggy Hughes of Searcy and Kim Hughes Nugent husband, Charles of Searcy; three great nieces, Carlene Hughes Crawford and husband, Chase Crawford of Pocahontas, Kirby Hughes of Searcy, and Paige Nugent of Searcy. He is also survived by his good friend and caregiver, Lonnie Horton of Heber Springs.
Elton has been a father figure and spiritual advisor to many families. He will be greatly missed.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 21st at Pickens Chapel Cemetery.

Jewell Laverne Hughes, 83, of Searcy passed away Monday, April 1, 2019 at Unity Health Medical Center. She was born February 28, 1936 in Vilonia, Arkansas to the late George and Loleta Whisnant.
Jewell attended South Heights Freewill Baptist Church. She married young. Her and her husband were married October 1, 1951 and not long after she started working for the International Shoe Company. Through the years she and her husband owned and operated their own business, Searcy Sewing Vac. She loved to travel with her husband while he Pastored several churches across the states. She loved to play the piano. Jewell was greatly loved by her family, friends, and church family. She will be deeply missed.
Left to cherish her memory is her brother, Linza Whisnant, wife, Evelyn of Sherwood, Arkansas; and her caregiver, Lonnie Horton of Heber Springs, Arkansas; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her parents Jewell was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Elton Hughes.
