When Mattie Beatrice Ryan was born on March 22, 1908, in Dyer, Tennessee, her father, John, was 34, and her mother, Alice, was 23. She married James Albert Sandefer (1888–1938) and they had five children together. She then married William Monroe Hughes on August 26, 1944, in Watervliet, Michigan. She died on September 14, 1996, in North Little Rock, Arkansas, at the age of 88, and was buried in Searcy, Arkansas.

When William Monroe Hughes was born on July 5, 1900, in England, Arkansas, his father, James, was 34 and his mother, Sarah, was 40. He married Fannie Zona Almeada Gann in May 1919. He then married Mattie Beatrice Ryan on August 26, 1944, in Watervliet, Michigan. He died on August 18, 1973, in his hometown at the age of 73, and was buried in Searcy, Arkansas.
