Melvin Richard Hughes, age 83 of Searcy, died Tuesday, September 27, 2016 in Searcy. He was born October 7, 1932 in Letona, Arkansas to Julius Idris Hughes and Ava Ardith Bennett Hughes. He was a US Army Veteran, serving as a Green Beret and in Special Forces. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Juanita “Jonnie” Hughes; seven daughters, Melvina Miller and husband Don of Hutchinson, Kansas, Lynn Whitehead of Tennessee, Teresa Peterson of Judsonia, Joyce Lawson of Judsonia, Donna Hackworth and husband Brandon of Batesville, Becky Bolding and husband Jason of Judsonia, Alicia McGlone and husband Christopher of Harker Heights, Texas; one son, Alex Blevins and wife Cindy of Blanchard, Oklahoma; two brothers, Marvin Hughes and wife Bobbie of Searcy, Roy Hughes and wife Linda of Kensett; two sisters, Wilma Lee Christian of High Ridge, Missouri, Louise Spencer and husband Walter of McRae; and a host of loving grandchildren and other family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Ardith Hughes; and three sisters, Vernell Coursey, Inez Davis and Laveda Harden. He was extremely proud of his family, his Valley Baptist Church family and his service to our country. Visitation will be Friday at Valley Baptist Church from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be Saturday at Valley Baptist Church at 10:00 am with interment to follow at Pickens Chapel Cemetery.
