OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Fern Barnes, 88, of Overland Park died Dec. 25, 2006, at St. Joseph Medical Center. She was born Sept. 11, 1918, in Pierce City, Mo., to James Alfred and Hazel Nimmo Slankard. She grew up in Pittsburg, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Athol Barnes in August 1996.
Survivors include her sons, Donald Barnes and wife Diane Ford of Lake Worth, Fla., Garry Barnes and wife Luanna of Wadsworth, Ill., Larry Barnes and wife Janet of Overland Park; a brother, Harold Slankard of Belvidere, Ill.; a sister, Ruth Black of Pittsburg and Dr. J. Edward Slankard of Leawood, Kan.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Johnson County Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bella Vista Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, Va., 22038-1131.
Arrangements are by D.W. Newcomer's Sons in Overland Park.
