William Holland White, 94, of Kansas City, Mo., died April 28, 2017, in a North Kansas City, Mo., hospital.

He was born Dec. 8, 1922, to John Franklin and Octavia Lee (Holland) White on the family farm north of Maysville. He graduated from Gravette High School in 1941 and left for the Navy in January of 1943. He served on the USS Sturtevant DE 239 from June, 1943, until he left in April, 1944, to go to radar school in Chicago. He then served on the USS Springfield CL 66 from September, 1944, until he left this ship in Tsingtao, China, in November of 1945. The Springfield CL had escorted President Roosevelt to Yalta to meet with Churchill and Stalin in January of 1945, participated in the Okinawa invasion and was the First U.S. cruiser to anchor in enemy waters following the surrender of Japan.

He married Mary Fuller, a fellow GHS 1941 graduate, April 26, 1944, in Kansas City, Kan. They made their home in Kansas City, Mo., until moving to North Kansas City, Mo., with their baby son John Charles in 1952. Holland graduated from Finlay Engineering College in 1949. He worked for Armco Steel as a senior mechanical engineer until retiring in January, 1984. He served as a deacon at Ivanhoe Park Christian Church and had been an active member of First Christian Church, North Kansas City, since 1955. He was a member of the Kansas City Banjo Band, playing for nursing homes and groups as a volunteer from 1972 to 2014.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings, Leda Young, Leta White, Merle Estes, Orpha Douglas, Verba Lee Kays and Oliver White.

Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Mary, of the home; son John Charles and wife Maryanna, of Michigan; Valeria White, John's former wife and mother of Holland's three grandsons, Nathan William, Charles Eugene and Johnathan Holland White; two great-grandsons, Gabriel Eugene and Holland Ryker White.

Funeral services were May 2 at White Chapel Funeral Home, in Gladstone, Mo. Graveside services and burial will he at Bethel Cemetery south of Gravette Saturday, May 13, at 2 p.m. Arrangements were by White Chapel Funeral Service.
