Obituary

On Sunday, February 10, 2013, Raymond Earl Martin fulfilled his earthly ministry and went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was born Thursday, January 30, 1936 in Conway to the late Clarence Monroe and Bonnie Lucille Padgett Martin. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Brannon Martin; four children Mitzi Martin Pratt (Tommy), Pamela Martin Haley, Ray Martin Jr. (Vicki) and Barbi Martin Akridge (Don) all of Conway; one sister Margaret Martin Clements of Conway, four brothers Henry Martin (Gloria) of Chino Valley, AZ, Aubrey Martin (Sherry) of West Jordan, UT, Eddie Martin (Betty) of North Little Rock and Doug Martin (Jane) of Conway, 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Raymond graduated from Conway High in 1953 and went on to attend Arkansas Technical University in Russellville where he served in the ROTC. After a brief stint in Memphis he made his home back in Conway where he worked at and later retired as Superintendent of the Conway Corporation Water Treatment Plant for 33 years.
He was a member of Cadron Ridge Baptist Church where he served as deacon for over 46 years and church treasurer for 31 years. His love for the Lord was evident in the way he lived his life, from the way he taught his children to the way he treated others, all praise and honor was given to the Lord.
He was a wonderful man, known by several names: Honey, Daddy, Papa, Poppa Bear, Uncle Ray, Raymond and even Slick, all holding a very special meaning to the person who called him by that name. To some he was a father or grandfather, an uncle or brother, to one very special lady he was the love of her life, her husband. Although he was different things to different people one thing was common among all, he was well respected, admired and loved by all who knew him.
He was a man of very few words, but when he spoke, you listened. With his witty sense of humor he could keep a room in stitches with his infamous one liners. And with the snap of his fingers he could quiet a room in seconds.
Of all his accomplishments, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave him the greatest sense of pride. Known for “counting their ribs”, he’s sure to know just how many ribs each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren have as they could not escape his grasp each time they came to visit, always leaving his arms with a huge roar of laughter. He enjoyed cheering them on at ballgames and watching them perform at school musicals and programs, his proudest moments being able to watch them follow in his footsteps and be baptized.
He loved and was loved by all who knew him, his legacy will live on for many years to come and there is no doubt that this world is a better place because of Raymond Martin.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00pm, Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway (501) 327-7727. Funeral service will be held at 1:00pm, Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Cadron Ridge Baptist Church with Brother Del Stone and Brother Paul Hudson officiating. Interment will follow in the Stone Cemetery.
