THOMAS, R.S. - R.S. Thomas, one of the oldest residents of Rogers, died Saturday morning at his home in this city, corner of Third and Elm streets, at the age of seventy-eight years, four months and four days. He had been very low for a week past and his death was not unexpected. Mr. Thomas has been in poor health for many years and while at times he was able to go to the farm in the summer, the greater portion of the time he had been confined to his home. Funeral services were held at the home of his only daughter, Mrs. Hugh J. Miller, Sunday afternoon at three o'clock. Owing to the heavy rainstorm it was found necessary to postpone the interment until Monday morning. Mr. Thomas was born in Culpepper county, Va. but went with his parents to Ohio when but a few years old. He lived in Ohio until he was eighteen and then went west at the time of the gold excitement. For over thirty years he lived in various parts of the southwest, seeking gold, ranching, etc. He served four years as sheriff and also served a term in the legislature and it was while engaged in scouting against the Indians on one of the various outbreaks that he received the title of "Captain" Thomas by which he has been best known since coming to Benton county. In 1882 he came to Benton county and bought the farm in the southeast part of town that embraced what is now known as the Blackburn, Wallace and Fair Grounds additions. His farm joined the old Dalton farm, part of which is now owned by Rev. Jordan, and he married the daughter of his neighbor, Miss Sarah A. Dalton. To them was born one daughter, Mrs. Lola Miller. While the deceased is scarcely known to the newer residents of the city few men have been better known to the older ones and they hold his memory in pleasant remembrance.
