MELBOURNE - Rex Tate, 80, of Melbourne died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, in Little Rock.
Born July 9, 1928, in Lunenburg, he was the son of Burton Michael Tate and Gertie O'Neal Tate. He was united in marriage to Jeane Kerr on July 9, 1949. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries received during the Korean War.
He lived in Izard County most of his life. He owned and operated a skating rink and a dry cleaning shop, drove a dump truck for V.T. Rush, had been the Melbourne city marshal and was retired from the Arkansas Highway Department. He was a member of Melbourne First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jeane Tate; two daughters, Becky Jo Heflin of Maumelle and Tammy Rex Tate Lawrence Tedford of Little Rock; a brother, Vance Tate of Melbourne; two sisters, Madge Stephens of Melbourne and Diane Kent of Springfield, Mo.; three grandchildren, Courtney Galster and Alex Kent, both of Little Rock, and Emryl Lawrence of Conway; two great-grandchildren, Skyler Galster and Elijah Galster; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Faye Smith.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Melbourne First Baptist Church with Ricky Burke officiating. Burial will be in Lunenburg Cemetery under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.
Pallbearers will be Kenya Wyatt, Carol Wood Caraway, Janet Lamb, Tammy Sanders, Sara Beth Dellinger and Judy Walker Qualls.
Honorary pallbearers are Gray Dellinger, Matthew Dellinger, Fred Lamb, Hayden Wyatt, Sanders Lee Wyatt, Burton Lamb, Alex Dellinger, Mark Herrington, James H. Gaston, Skeeter Beene and Stoney Nethercot.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Melbourne.
