HAYS, J.P. (Buck} - J.P. (Buck} Hays passed away very suddenly at his home near Elk Horn Tavern on Saturday morning, October 10, 1925. He was born in Tennessee in 1857 and came to Arkansas when only a year old and has since lived here. He was married to Mattie A. Heath November 4, 1881. To this union four children were born, all of whom survive him and are: Mrs. O.T. Vandegriff of Picher, Okla.; Lena, Harold and Virgil at home and three children by a former marriage: Mrs. Leslie Massie of Sarcoxie, Mo.; Mrs. Pearl Vandegriff of Picher, Okla. and High Hays of Rogers. Interment was made in the Pratt cemetery Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Funeral services were conducted by Bro. Renfro of Avoca and the Masonic and Odd Fellows orders.

(from Bestwater} Again our community was saddened on October 10th, 1925 when the sudden death was reported of another of our pioneers, Mr. Buck Hays, who has been our blacksmith for a great many years. His word and his presence will be missed by all who knew him. The Free Masons and Odd Fellows lodges had charge of the last sad rites of laying him to
rest in the Pratt cemetery Sunday afternoon, Rev. Renfro of Avoca making a short talk to the large crowd present.

(from Garfield} Friends of "Buck" Hays were shocked to hear of his death Friday. Mr. Hays has operated a blacksmith shop in and around Garfield for many years. He had just finished telling the children that he had not been in better health for many years when he gasped and died without a struggle. Interment was in Pratt cemetery.
