Lawrence Wayland Dies in Action in The Philippines
Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Wayland of Dolph received a War Department message Monday, telling of the death of their son, Pfc. Lawrence Wayland, age 24, who was killed in action October 28, during action in the Philippines. Pfc. Wayland had been overseas several months, serving in Hawaii a few months before being sent to the western Pacific. He was born and reared at Dolph.

Funeral services for Private First Class Lawrence L. Wayland, who gave his life in defense of his country, were held at Trimble Campground, Monday afternoon, with interment in the cemetery there. Burial was with military honors, the V. F. W. post of Calico Rock conducting the military ceremonies. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Hubert Morrow of Calico Rock. The Roller Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements. A large gathering of relatives and friends attended the services, attesting the esteem in which the young hero was held.
Private First Class Wayland was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Wayland of Dolph. He was born at Dolph February 5, 1921, and spent all of his life in that community. He was called for military service, August 8, 1942 and received his training at Comp Howze, Texas and Camp Roberts, California. He went overseas to the Southwest Pacific area in March of 1944, and was killed in action on Leyte Island, October 28, 1944.
Surviving are his parents; one brother, Sanford Wayland of Dolph and three sisters, Mrs. Velma Ware of Dinuba, Calif., Mrs. Mary Langston of Norwalk, Calif., and Mrs. Henryetta Sanders of Dinuba, Calif.
