Robert H. Wayland Dies at Home Here Sunday
Robert H. Wayland, 73, life-long resident of Izard County, and a resident of Calico Rock for twenty-five years, died at his home at this place Sunday afternoon about three o’clock. He had been confined at home for over a week, suffering from infirmities that had made rapid inroads on his health the past several weeks.
Mr. Wayland had a wide acquaintance in this section, as he had been in the mercantile business at Pineville and Calico Rock for fifty-three years. His first business venture was at Pineville, moving to Calico Rock in 1918 to engage in business in partnership with J. S. Sears, whose interest in the store he acquired after a few years. Mr. Wayland was one of the principal stockholders in the State Bank of Calico Rock and for several years preceding his death was president of the board of directors. He also served as a member of the calico Rock school board for several years preceding, his death, being president of the board.
He was a devout member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church and besides being a regular attendant at church services gave unsparingly of his means in support of the church. The church in his old community at Pineville, which was erected largely from his means and effort, stand as a monument to his zeal and interest in the furtherance of morals in the community. Mr. Wayland enjoyed the love and respect of all with whom he came in contact.
Mr. Wayland was married in 1890 to Miss Ellen McNeill of this community, who survives. Other survivors of his immediate family are two sons, Phillip L. Wayland of Pineville and Paul L. Wayland of Jonesboro; two daughters, Mrs. Gulley Seay of Pineville and Mrs. Donon McCormack of Calico Rock.
Following brief services at home the funeral was held Monday at three o’clock at the church at Pineville, Rev. Y. Whitfield being in charge. Interment was in Pineville cemetery, funeral arrangements being in charge of the McGuire Funeral Home of this place. Pall bearers were: L. E. Evans, E. C. Rodman, J. M. Floyd, J. O. Cheney, Cecil Brumitt and Goleman Sears.
