Hershel Franklin Wayland, 78, of Salem, Ark. son of late Steve F. Wayland and Pearl Young Wayland, was born on May 1, 1919, at Crossroads, Ark. He died Sunday, October 4, 1998, at the Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains, MO. He was 78.

During his working years, he was self-employed, selling bait at Lake Norfork. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two brothers, Fred Wayland and his wife Inez of Baker City, Oregon, and Wavil Wayland and wife Marie of Mtn. Home; four sisters, Auline Morgan and husband Don of Viola, Audie Richardson of Batesville, Reamell Turner and husband Lewis of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Helen Zumwalt and husband Dale of Lexington, Oregon; and several nieces and nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Darrel and Willie Wayland; one sister Lois Rand; one half brother, and his parents.

Services were held October 6, 1998 at the Wises Chapel Baptist Church, at Cross Roads with Brother Price Loveless officiating. Interment was at the Wises Chapel Cemetery under the direction of the Cox-Estes Funeral home in Salem.

Note: He shares a double gravestone with his brother Darrell William Wayland.
