BUTTRY, John - John Buttry was born May 9th, 1829 and died Oct. 27, 1905, aged 76 years, 6 months and 18 days. He was married to Miss Margaret Martin in Hawkins county, Tenn. in the year 1850. This union resulted in the birth of 12 children, five sons and seven daughters, all of which are now living save one. Soon after marriage he emigrated to Arkansas and settled on Pea Ridge where he has lived and labored continuously since that time till summoned to his final call. He lived a life of industry; the habit formed in his youth characterized his life through manhood and old age. So fixed in these habits he could scarcely realize that the infirmities of age or even afflictions should call upon him to lay them down, choosing them as the asylum of his declining years rather than retirement. So blessed above the average man, he suffered but little affliction through life save the last ten months, making it harder for him to yield. He lived a life of punctuality; so prompt in his dealings in all the business affairs of life with his fellowman he met dates promptly or satisfactory negotiations made for further time; his word, his note, his bond, was not questioned by any who knew him well. He lived not alone to himself and for himself; he was a cheerful supporter of every enterprise that had for its object and purpose the promotion and elevation of society, a liberal contributor to all deserving charities. He lived a life of cheerfulness; so cheerful was his nature that the youth enjoyed and sought his association; manhood and old age alike passed pleasant hours in his company. For more than fifty years he lived a consistent member of the Baptist church known as Twelve Corner Church, one of the strongest pillars and supports of that church. Prompt in attendance upon all its services, contributing his means to its support. He saw the end coming and often spoke of it cheerfully. He would speak of relatives and friends who had passed over the river, saying: "I will soon be with them." He told me on one occasion, "I have reached as high a standard of age as any of my family ever reached. The end is nigh." He expressed no regrets, no desire for further time. His body was interred in his old home cemetery where he, more than fifty years ago, was present and participated in the first burial in that cemetery. What then the conclusion? The widow has lost a kind and faithful husband, the children a benevolent father, Pea Ridge one of its oldest and most time-honored citizens, and Uncle John Buttry has gone to his reward where sickness, pain and death can ne'er enter and the tear drop of sorrow is never known. A Friend.
