Denton's parents were John Grissom Penn and Addie Ruth Davis Penn; Thelma's parents were William B. and Josie V. Campbell Lawrence
Denton Marvin Penn Sr., 88, of Black Rock, died March 12, 2008, at St. Bernards in Jonesboro.
Born March 12, 1920, in the Denton community, he was the son of John and Addie Davis Penn. He was a lifelong resident of Lawrence County and worked as a commercial hay farmer on the farm on which he was born. He also worked for Baymiller Auto Parts for 10 years and was manager of the Portia Gin for several years.
He was a member of the Smithville Masonic Lodge #29 for over 60 years. He served on the ASCS Committee for 15 years and on the Lawrence County committee for nine years. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church for over 50 years, served as deacon and Sunday school director for 37 years.
He was married to Thelma Lawrence on July 12, 1941. She preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 1999. He married Bonnie Moudy on May 18, 2001. She preceded him in death on June 1, 2007.
He is survived by three sons, Denton Marvin "D.M." Penn Jr. and wife Deborah, Green Valley, Ill., Lawrence Joe "Larry" Penn and wife Sandra, Baytown, Texas, and Mart Lee Penn and wife Susan, Black Rock; six grandchildren, Corky Penn, Bart Penn, Phillip Penn, Tamara Sorg, Sonya Lee and Christi Ringel; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Saturday at 2 p.m. at Smithville Baptist Church. Burial was in Smithville Cemetery under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service.
