LOCAL GIRL WORST HURT OF SURVIVORS
Funeral Was Held Sunday For Rogers Youth Killed When Car Wrecked Near Here
The most seriously injured of any of the survivors of the automobile wreck of Friday night, near here which proved instantly fatal to Carl Ash, 15, of Rogers, is Jaunise Radler, 15 year-old daughter of Mrs. Blanche Radler of Bentonville. She will be confined to her bed for several weeks, possible months, it is understood. Carl Looney, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Looney of Rogers, and a nephew of Virgil Looney, deputy clerk of Benton County, now is reported as out of danger although he was unconscious most of the time and his condition critical for more than 48 hours following the crash. His injuries included a dislocated shoulder.
Miss Radler’s right leg was broken between the knee and hip and she received, in addition to other injuries, numerous serious cuts when she was thrown into a barbwire fence by the catapulting automobile. It was at first feared her injuries might also prove fatal, it is understood.
Funeral Was Held Sunday
Young Ash died instantly from a broken neck. He was the son of Mrs. Gertie Ash Cook of Rogers and Herbert Ash of Fayetteville. Other survivors include his grandparents living at Eureka Springs. He is remembered by Rogers people and others who knew him as a model boy, and his tragic death saddened the whole community. Funeral services were held for him Sunday afternoon at the Rogers Baptist Church by the pastor, the Rev. J.W. Royal. Burial was in the Rogers cemetery.
The other five young people in the wrecked car were Mary Coe Peel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Peel, Jr., of Bentonville, who received a serious cut on her head and other injuries, and is still confined to her home; Alberta Allred, daughter of Circuit Clerk and Mrs. Fred Allred, and Gussie Faris, daughter of Mrs. Frank Apperson, both of Bentonville, and both of whom received serious injuries but were able yesterday to be out again; Jack Miller, 18, of Denver, Colo., and Charles Ragsdale, Jr., of Rogers, driver of the car. Neither of the last named were seriously hurt.
Car Was A Total Wreck
The accident happened a half mile north of Bentonville on Highway 100 when the group of eight young people were driving north toward Bella Vista. Others of their friends, including Peggy Jean Bryan and Mary Ann Martin, both of Bentonville, and some boys from Joplin, who were in a car just ahead. The crash is said to have occurred when young Ragsdale driving his fathers V-8 Ford sedan, attempted to pass that automobile. Loose gravel along the edge of the pavement was blamed for the wreck. The Ragsdale machine is said to have turned over three times, once clearing the ground for a distant of 30 feet, and skidding along the paving for a distance of 100 feet, or more. It was completely wrecked.
The dead youth and other occupants of the wrecked automobile were brought to Bentonville in ambulances of the Callison-McKinney Funeral Home of Bentonville and in the cars of passing motorists who assisted of the scene of the accident. Those injured were brought to local physicians for treatment and the body of young Ash removed to the Callison funeral home at Rogers.
