Mrs. Gladys Jannie Burks Massey, 63, of 921 Ouachita St., died Sunday in a local hospital following a long illness. Born in Union County, Aug. 19, 1906, she was the daughter of Sidney and Sallie Jackson Burks. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she served as chairman of Circle No. 4, president of the Missionary Society; teacher in Sunday School, a Baptist Training Worker and a member of the Deaconess Board. Surviving are her husband, Johnny Massey, Sr., El Dorado; two sons, Johnny Massey, Jr.; Marianna, and Harold Massey, El Dorado; four daughters, Mrs. Ruby Preston and Mrs. Alberta Howard, both of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Betty Sue Brown of Blytheville, and Mrs. Ophelia Gillespie, Houston, Tex.; four sisters, Mrs. Rosie Powell, Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Marzella Massey, El Dorado, Mrs. Mary Bowie, Bastrop, La., and Mrs. Lucille Baker, Oakland, Calif.; three brothers, Henry Burks, El Dorado, Milton Burks, Bastrop, and Esau Burks, Detroit; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church, Cordell at Grove Streets, with the Rev. E. A. Porchia officiating. Burial will follow in Rehobeth Cemetery, Norphlet, under the direction of Sims Mortuary. The body will be placed in the church at noon. (El Dorado Times - December 10, 1969)
