Garland Matthews Taylor 88 of Clarksville passed away Thursday November 20, 2014; He was born June 27, 1926, at Red Lick Mountain in Johnson County, Arkansas. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years Peggy Lois (Leeds) Taylor, his mother and father Edna (Matthews) and Forbin Taylor, and brother's Gordon and Bobby Taylor. His early years were spent going to school, helping on the family farm, hunting (which he did until 1991), and playing high school football and amateur baseball. He graduated from Clarksville High School in 1943. He continued coon hunting until 1991. He was interested in community affairs, current events, and politics. He enjoyed sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and the Arkansas Razorbacks. He also played bridge. He went to work at Ozark Box and Crating Company in July of 1951 and was production foreman 15 of 17 years. He also farmed part time, raising registered Black Angus cattle until 1986. In January, 1971, he was appointed Arkansas State Revenue agent for Johnson County by then Governor Dale Bumpers, having been recommended for the position by then State Representative Sterlin Hurley. He retired on December 31, 1987. Garland was a member of the Mt. Vernon Cemetery Association, trustee of Mt. Vernon community building, and a member of the Horsehead Water Users Association board of directors about nine years. Approximately three years of his tenure was spent as president of the board. He is survived by a niece Patricia (Roger) Artz, of Clarksville, and nephews Michael (Pauline) Dinkens of Maumee, Ohio, Randall (Beverly) Taylor, of Ft. Smith and sister-in-law Velma Taylor, of Clarksville.
There will be an open visitation at Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Garland’s funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2014 at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John Palmer officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery with James Cox, Dan Leeds, Dean Pratt, Mark Pratt, Gary Raible, and Gene Raible serving as Pallbearers; and his old baseball buddies: K.P. Harvey, John Harvey, Harold Harvey, Nap Felkens, and D.J. Turner serving as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mt. Vernon Cemetery Association or Arkansas hospice.
Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home (479) 754-2201.

Born in the Mount Vernon Community just north of Clarksville, AR, daughter of Robert Edgar and Eunice Harris Leeds. Married Garland M. Taylor in 1951.
Survived by her husband of 59 years, Garland Taylor; and her sister Jeane's two children and spouses.
Preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Robbie Lorene Leeds, Felma Leeds, Jeane Dinkens; and one brother, Robert M. Leeds.
