Mrs. (2) CUNNINGHAM

Heiskill Cemetery
Baxter County,
Arkansas

Mrs. Cunningham
Wife of Jonathan Calvin Cunningham

It is unclear if this is the grave of the Second or Third wife of Jonathan Calvin Cunningham.
The Second wife was Mary Erskin Cunningham, born 1848, died December 1872.
The Third wife was Minerva Elizabeth Caststeel Cunningham, daughter of Dr. William Riley Caststeel & Martha A. Akins Cunningham, born 1852, died May 1880 (in childbirth), married September 4, 1874.

As an added note, Mrs. Cunningham's grave is outlined with standing up limestone rocks with a tall slender standing sentry at the head of the grave. This is one of the few remaining graves in the cemetery with this type of markings. Until the 1980's many of the older graves in the Heiskill Cemetery were marked with tall, slender, sometime sharply pointed, rocks that extended almost as far below the soil as above. The cemetery had an almost eerie appearance as it it had some kind of teeth from some pre-historic monster protruding from the soil. In the 1980's, the people that were in charge of the cemetery began removing almost all of those type markers and replacing them with small, usually flat, markers to facilitate mowing. The cemetery is well maintained, but it has lost much of the character that it used to have.
