William J. Holland was born in Maryland September 9, 1812 and died at his home in Benton County February 20, 1900. He lived in Maryland until he was 12 years of age when he with his parents moved to Irdell County, North Carolina. He was married to Sarah N. Moore in 1840, five children blessed this union, three sons and two daughters. The girls died in the county where they were born. He, with his wife and three sons, moved to this state in the fall of 1868 and settled in Benton County where he still resided at his death. He embraced religion at his home in 1882 and lived a model christian life. He never seemed to enjoy himself better than when attending divine worship. Grandpa Holland, or uncle Billy, as he was familiarly called, needs no praise from me. To know him was to love and respect him. His social life was above reproach. He was ever a friend to those in need. We laid him to rest in the Thornsberry Cemetery. Bro. Head conducted the funeral service. The day was stormy but quite a number were at the burial. J.J. Arthurs.
