Vernon Franklin "LEFTY" Powers of Mt. Vernon(Faulkner County), Arkansas, died Thursday, April 30, 2008. He was 89 years old. Mr. Powers was born in 1919 to the late Charlie and Cora Powers. Mr. Powers was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge #736; and he was a 32nd Degree Mason. Mr. Powers was also an avid hunter and loved to fish the Arkansas River.
He enjoyed traveling around to different functions with his cooker and cooking the fish for the events.
Mr. Powers was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years: Lois Powers; two brothers: Jack and Charles Powers; and a sister: Hattie Simms.
He is survived by his daughters: Patsy Brewer and her husband, Daymon of Mt. Vernon, Arkansas, Linda Cheek and her husband, Ben of Conway, Arkansas; his grandson: Terry Brewer and his wife, Reta of Conway, Arkansas; his great-granddauther: Amanda Brewer of Conway, Arkansas; and a brother-in-law: Jake Sims of Greenbrier, Arkasnsas.
Funeral service was held on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at 10:00a.m. at the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Rev. Charles Millsaps officiated the service. Burial, with full Masonic Rites followed the church service, at Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
Ben Cheek, Daymon Brewer, Harold Baze, Terry Brewer, John Armstrong, David Warren served as pallbearers:
Honary pallbearers were: Curtis Fulmer, Calvin Hawkins, Douglas Hawkins, Oscar Gray, Weldon Davis, Jake Sims, Rusty Noggle, and Eddie Herndon.

Lois Powers, 83, of Mt. Vernon, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004 at Arkansas Hospice Center at Fort Roots. She was born March 17, 1922 in Garner, AR to the late Thomas Fred and Lillie May Newton Cox.

She was also preceded in death by one brother and four sisters and was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon Powers, two daughters, Patsy Brewer and her husband Daymon of Mt. Vernon, Linda Cheek and her husband Ben of Conway, one grandson, Terry Brewer and his wife Reta, and one great-granddaughter, Amanda Brewer.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004 at Mt. Vernon Cemetery with Charles Milsaps and Euldean Lester officiating.
