Sarah Martin Powers (1835 - 1912)
Sarah A. Harkrider Powers, 85, a lifelong resident of Conway, died Nov. 27, 1955. She was born Aug. 5, 1870, on the Harkrider Homestead which became the Harkrider Addition to the City of Conway.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas F. Powers. A daughter of the late James H. Harkrider and Marcy, "Mollie," Harkrider.
A young Sarah attended The Baptist Church, which became First Baptist Church, located on the corner of Van Ronkle and Chestnut Streets, where her father was a deacon. The church building also served as an early courthouse and school. It was in the church building that Sarah attended school.
Sarah was a charter member of the Holly Grove, No. 95, of the Woodmen Circle. As an active member she held most of the stations in the Grove. In her active years she and her husband ran a 14 room boarding house at 1104 Front Street in Conway.
Surviving were three sons, James H. Powers and Charles N. Powers, of Conway, and John M. Powers of Forrest City. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bessie McFarland of Washington state.
Other survivors include brothers, Walter C. Harkrider of Muskogee, Okla; B. Frank Harkrider of Oklamoma City,
Okla.,and Benjamin Franklin Harkrider of Albuquerque, N.M. and the late Sam Everett Harkrider and James Harkrider. Three grandchildren survive, Jimmie Lee Powers Thrall,
Verda Mae Powers Foster and Charles L. Powers. Four great-grandchildren survive.
Pallbearers were Clarence Johnson, Robert Troutman, Jess Webb, Otis Moore, Douglas Carmichael and Mason Burkett. Honorary pallbearers included members of the Conway Fire Departnent and Sam Henry, J.I. Summers, Dr. C.H. Dickerson, H.F. Mosley, Jack Chisler, Homer Jones, C.J. Reasoner, and T.D. Teedy.
Funeral services were held at McNutt Funeral Chapel by the Rev. J.H. Street, pastor of First Baptist Church. Burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery.
