BALD KNOB -- Wayman Evans, 82, of Searcy died Sunday. He was born in McKaysville, Ga., and was the son of Robert Rowland and Lillian Russell Evans.
He was a retired farmer. He also was a basket maker who was designated a "Master Craftsman" by the Arkansas Endowment for the Arts. His crafts activities included conducting a basket making workshop at Arkansas College and practicing basket making weekends at the Ozard Folk Center in Mountain View.
He learned the art as he was growing up in Georgia. Both his father and grandfather were basket makers.
He has had a basket displayed at the Smithsonian Institution.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Wade Evans; four sons, David Evans of Hillister, Texas, John Robert Evans and Ray Evans both of Batesville and James Evans of Newnata; three daughters, Betty Brooks of Bald Knob, Mary Benton of Searcy and Linda Candler of Athens, Ala.; 23 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter and a grandson.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in Palestine Cemetery under the direction of Powell Funeral Home of Bald Knob - Judsonia.
