Samuel Lee Rakes of Cary, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 10, 2007.

He was born March 31, 1934, in Bentonville to Roy "Shorty" and Mary Frances Long Rakes. He attended Bentonville Public School and graduated from Bentonville High School in 1952. He attended the University of Arkansas where he received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering on June 1, 1957. He also was commissioned in the U.S. Army that same week and married his bride of 50 years, Barbara Marie Smith.

He worked as a chemical engineer with solid rocket fuels and later worked for EPA from which he retired in 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara M. Rakes; children, Teresa and Jay Custis, Steven Rakes, Kathleen and Kevin Beisley, Michael and Tina Rakes, Mark and Pamela Rakes and Christopher Rakes; grandchildren, Nathan Custis, Heather and Shaun Beisley, Hayley and Landon Rakes; one aunt and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Meredith Beisley.

A rosary was held Aug.14 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.

Funeral Mass was Aug. 16 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Cary. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18 at Barron Cemetery in Benton County.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Safe Haven for Cats, 8431-137 Garvey Drive, Raleigh, N.C. 27616.
