Homer Edward Mize of Smithville, Arkansas
November 11, 1927 - August 16, 2020

Homer Edward Mize, 92, of Smithville passed away Sunday, August 16, 2020 at Five Rivers Medical Center in Pocahontas. He was born November 11, 1927 in Calamine to the late Shelby and Maude Elizabeth Bilbrey Mize. Homer graduated high school in 1945. He joined the U. S. Army in 1945 serving until 1947 during WW 11 and the Korean conflict. He married Maxine Davis on February 15, 1953 in Newark. He worked in the shoe factory in Batesville, was an assistant cashier at Smithville Bank for 9 years, and a bookkeeper for Town and Community. He was a postmaster for the United States Postal Service for 25 years. He served on the board of Lawrence County Regional Water and Legal Postmasters. Homer was a member of the Lions Club and American Legion. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Smithville where he was assistant Sunday School Superintendent. Homer raised beef cattle on his farm. He helped raise three children at the request of Mr. Balentine.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Leland Isac Mize; and sister, Durene Cureton.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine Mize of the home; a son, Max Mize of Calamine; grandchildren, Jacqulyn Seamans, Jimmy Mize, and Jill Mize; great-grandchildren, Karma Seamans, Braelyn Mize, and Waylon Mize all of Smithville.

A graveside visitation will be Friday, August 21, 2020 from 1 until 2 p.m. in Smithville Cemetery. Graveside services will follow immediately after at 2 p.m. All arrangements are under the direction of Cox Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Jimmy Mize, Clint Seamans, Carl Balentine, and Cecil Balentine.

Maxine Mize, 101, of Smithville passed from this life on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro. She was born June 29, 1922, in Walnut Ridge to the late Homer and Nelly (Crabtree) Davis. She was united in marriage to Homer Mize on February 15, 1953, in Newark, Arkansas. She was a teacher for many years during her lifetime and was also a cattle farmer. She was a member of the Smithville United Methodist Church. Maxine was also a member of the EHC and Eastern Star. Maxine lived a fulfilling life, living to be almost 102 years of age at her home.

In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Homer Mize; brothers, Paul Davis and Grover Davis; sister, Adda Sue Davis.

She is survived by her son, Max Mize and wife Jane of Calamine; grandchildren, Jill Mize, Wyndi Ratliff, and Philisha Smith; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 30, 2024, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Smithville United Methodist Church in Smithville. Funeral services will follow immediately at 11 a.m. with Harold Russell and Michael Dodson officiating. Special music will be played by Darlene Moore. Interment will follow in Smithville Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Skeeter Justice, David Davis, Jeremy Davis, Sloan Durham, Kirk Ratliff, and Doug Smith.

Honorary pallbearers are Nathan Davis, Jeff Douglas, Daniel Sullins, Oren Ladding, Joe Wallis, Clint Seamans, Josh Huff, Brad Maxwell, Russ Cureton, Paul Carter, Robert King, Carl Balentine, Jackie Crews, and Ron Rose.
