Alpha Joe Wood, President and C.E.O. of Wood Haulers, Inc., passed away at Baptist Medical Center, Heber Springs, on February 3, 2006 at the age of 67. Joe was born April 23, 1938 in Pangburn, Arkansas to the late P.C. and Icy May Wood. He attended Pangburn School where he graduated in 1956. He then attended Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway, Arkansas. Joe began working with his father P.C. in 1956 when P.C. Wood & Son Lumber Company was established. He felt that his calling in life was to provide jobs to the people of Cleburne and White County. He was able to expand that calling to include people from all across the United States with the founding of Wood Haulers. Inc., where he was President and C.E.O. until the time of his death. Joe was also the largest rice producer in White County, and extensive beef cattle, American quarter horse and Boer goat breeding operation. Joe was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather instilling the values of hard work and honesty into his family. Joe had the reputation of being a man of his word where a handshake and his word were a binding contract. He has been labeled an icon and legend in the business world by his peers and associates. Joe is survived by his childhood sweetheart, loving wife of 48 years, and business partner, Jo Ann, Sons, Joe Wood, Jr. and wife Shannon of Heber Springs, and Sandy Wood of Memphis, Tn. Daughters, Gigi Wood Davis and husband Greg of Savannah, Tn. and Princess Tharp and husband Felix of Heber Springs, ten grandchildren, Stacie Jo Wood Bote, Josh Wood, Stephen Wood, Justin Wood, Julie Wood Monk, Candy Wood, Sander Wood, Walter Tharp, Chance Tharp, and Joseph Tharp, sister, Patsy House of Little Rock, and brother P.C. Wood, Jr. of Birmingham, Alabama. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by two sisters, Billie Augustine Wood and Gloria Sunshine Hicks.
