Serena was born in White County, Illinois to John Alexander Kulbeth (b. 1804 in Montgomery County, North Carolina) and Julia Trousdale Kulbeth (b. Dec. 16, 1811 in Shawneetown, Gallatin, Illinois.
She was the third wife of Augustus S. Thomas, marrying on Nov. 23, 1857 in Crawford County, Arkansas. Serena was 20 yrs. old and Augustus was 50.
Serena and Augustus had the following children:

Robert Lee Thomas
Before marrying Serena, Augustus was married to Serena's sister, Louisa, and they had a daughter, Parisade. Louisa died giving birth and Parisade "Sadie" was raised by Augustus and Serena.
Augustus died in 1877. Serena then married James F. Steele on April 6, 1882 in Crawford County, Arkansas.
Serena's daughter Serena Augustus, married Marion "Frank" Steele, James F. Steele's son from a previous marriage, in 1883.
Sometime around 1887, James Frank Steele disappeared. The family never saw him again.
