PHIPPS, John W. - (from Walnut Hill) John W. Phipps died Tuesday, April 8th at the age of 81 years, two months and one day. Funeral services were held in the Old Liberty Church and were conducted by George Williams and Rev. Martin of Rogers. John W. Phipps was born January 31, 1843 in North Carolina and went to Tennessee with his parents at the age of four years, where they remained until 1870, going to Texas where he resided only one year. He settled in Benton county in 1871 where he lived on one farm for nearly half a century. He was married to Mary Ruddick January 25, 1876 and to this union was born eight children, all living except one daughter, Ettie May, who passed away at the age of three. The sons and daughters are widely scattered: Thomas W. Phipps, Garfield; Arthur N. Phipps, Springfield, Mo.; Ella Harlin, Vials, Colorado; Cora Phipps, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. H.B. Couch, Ibpeka, Kansas; Mrs. R.L. Deitrich, Wichita, Kansas; Isa Phipps, New York City. All the children were at the funeral but three daughters - Miss Isa being so far away and Mrs. Harlin and Mrs. Couch being unable to come. Besides leaving an aged widow, seven children and a number of grandchildren, no man in Benton county left more real friends who feel an interest in the loss of a friend and neighbor than did Uncle John Phipps. He was the purest man in word and deed that it has been our good fortune to meet in life. He established one of the first commercial orchards in east Benton county and was very successful in orchard and small fruit culture. He was baptized a number of years ago by Marion Clanton and always had a high estimate of true religion but was a man with utter contempt for pretentious goodness. The family join in thanks for the kindnesses during the sickness and death of our husband and father and for the many floral tokens of love and good will. Written by request by Mr. and Mrs. George W. Williams.
