LAWTON, I.B. - Died, April 3, 1909 at his residence in Bentonville, Ark., I.B. Lawton, in the 71st year of his age. Deceased was born in Barlow, Ohio August 24th, 1838. In 1880 he moved to western Kansas. From thence he came to Bentonville, Ark. in 1887 which was the home of his choice until his death. March the 18th, 1861 he was married to Mary Peterson. To this union were born three daughters. Two of these, Mrs. Kate Lewis and Miss Lucy Lawton, noted for their amiableness and accomplishments, together with the devoted wife and mother, had tenderly nursed and cared for him in his lingering affliction and were present when the not unexpected, yet sudden, end came. A beloved daughter in 1895 had gone before. Deceased was not a member of any church at the time of his death. He had formerly held membership in the M.E. Church. He was not opposed to the church as an institution but to what he regarded as its unnecessary divisions and the controversies arising therefrom. He believed the Bible and endeavored to obey its teaching as he understood it. His hope of salvation was through the Lord Jesus Christ as the savior of sinners. For some time before his death, realizing that according to the very nature of things his life here must soon end, he expressed himself as reconciled to death and greatly desired that he might not become a burden through a lingering death to his beloved family. In his death we lose a friend of the city's best interests, a strong advocate of temperance and good citizenship. The home has lost a devoted and loving husband and father. He laid no claims to perfection. May we not cover his errors with the mantle of Christian charity and cherish in our memory his virtues. The funeral service held by the writer, assisted by Rev. Bieber, by request without sermon, was attended by representatives from almost every part of the city's population in token of the esteem held for the deceased and sympathy for the bereft. May the blessed Holy Spirit, the Comforter, abide with and comfort the bereft in this sorrowing home. P. Carnahan.
