BELLA VISTA — James F. Gore, 86, of Bella Vista, passed away early on the morning of May 13, 2008. He was strong in death just as he was in life. He was the eldest son of Fletcher and Grace Gore and was born in Kentucky on Aug. 20, 1921. He was raised in Albany, N.Y., where the family moved during the Depression. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Joe, and sister, Annette.

He was a World War II veteran and served in both the Pacific Campaign, as well as the European Theater. He was a staff sergeant in the United States Army and commanded an armored reconnaissance vehicle. His unit, the 18th Cavalry Reconnaissance,14th Cavalry Group held strong at the Battle of the Bulge and they were surrounded by German forces. They destroyed their equipment and avoided the enemy. He was captured, spent time in POW camps, escaped from a POW train, was recaptured, and was badly injured by an allied aircraft attack on a POW train. He was repatriated from the German hospital in Limburg, Germany by the first group of troops over the bridge following the battle for the bridge at Remagen and spent years recovering from his war wounds. James was awarded the Purple Heart along with various other commendations. After serving in the Pacific Campaign, James met his bride to be, Cora, in Medford, Ore., while he was still in the service. They were married prior to him being shipped to the European Theater. After the war, Cora was very instrumental in James' full recovery from his injuries.

He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., and was a professional engineer, land surveyor, graduate architect and Realtor. For 30 years, he was the senior vice president of planning and engineering for Cooper Communities Inc. and was the principal designer of Bella Vista Village, Cherokee Village and Hot Springs Village in Arkansas and Tellioo Village in Tennessee. The final achievement of his career was to be the initial developer of Woods Creek in Bentonville.

He and his wife Cora were members of St. Theodore's Episcopal Church in Bella Vista and had enjoyed living at Concordia Care Center in Bella Vista for a number of years. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Cora I. Gore; twin sons and their wives, James W. Gore and wife Sandra of Bentonville, John F. Gore and wife Connie of Bentonville and daughter Annette I. Gore of Bella Vista; seven grandchildren, Mindy Ellington of Bella Vista, John F. Gore of Springfield, Mo., Keri Johnson of St. Louis, Mo., Steven Cauthren of Bentonville, Tiffany Chambliss of Cave Springs, Brandon Gore of Phoenix, Lindsay LaCaze of Pea Ridge; and 16 great-grandchildren, Lance Ellington, Jackson Ellington, Katelyn Ellington, Graelen James Gore, Isaiah Johnson, Leah Johnson, Elijah Johnson, Josiah Cauthren, Lilly Cauthren, Evan Cauthren, Kelsey Chambliss, Hannah Chambliss, Bannon Chambliss, Zoe Anne LaCaze, Andie Kate LaCase and Asa James LaCaze.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at St. Theodore's Episcopal Church in Bella Vista with the Rev. Ken Parks officiating. Burial will be in St. Theodore's Columbarium.

Military honors will follow the service.

BENTONVILLE — If ever there was woman born to be a mother and grandmother, it was Cora Gore. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren.

Cora Irene Gore, 88, passed into eternity on the evening of Dec. 14, 2010. She was born on March 23, 1922, in a farmhouse near Colfax, Wash. She was the only girl with seven brothers. Her three oldest brothers all died in infancy within a couple of months, two due to the Spanish flu pandemic of 1917 and one due to an aneurism.

Her parents, Carl William (Bill) and Clara Belle Matson, went on to have five more children. Cora showed her mothering instincts by helping raise her youngest brother, Hubert, who is now her only surviving brother.

Cora was raised in Washington and Idaho. Her father was a farmer and farmed with horses his entire life. Cora helped her mother cook and bake on a wood burnirg stove to feed her father and brothers who worked in the fields.

She was preceded in death by her parents and six of her brothers.

Cora met her husband of 64 years in Medford, Ore., during Worid War II, where she was a Western Union telegraph operator and he was a staff sergeant who commanded an armored reconnaissance vehicle. They married after a two-week whirlwind courtship.

Cora lived with her in-laws in Albany, N.Y., while Jim fought in the European Theatre and went missing-in-action during the Battle of the Bulge. Jim was captured and badly injured. Cora spent years helping Jim recover from his war wounds.

Following the War, Cora worked various jobs while Jim went to college. Jim graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, N.Y., and was a professional engineer, land surveyor, graduate architect and realtor.

Following college, Jim and Cora bought an old car, fixed it up and headed west with the idea of stopping and working along the way. They never made it past their second stop of Arkansas, where they settled and raised their fanuly.

Cora was the cement of the family where she raised three children, identical twin boys. Jim and John, and her daughter Annette. She was always devoted to her family and was a wonderful mother. She carried forth her loving and caring ways to her seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Over the years, the family lived in West Memphis, Cherokee Village and Bella Vista Village. Ark.

Cora also served as the office manager for Landscapes Inc., in Rogers. Ark., for a number of years where she worked with her son John.

After retiring, she and Jim lived at Concordia of Bella Vista for years and also were members of St. Theodore's Episcopal Church in Bella Vista, Ark. Jim passed on in 2008 and Cora moved to the Meadows in Bentonville, Ark., where she lived the remainder of her life.

She is survived by her brother, Hubert and wife, Joann, of Longview, Wash.; her twin sons and their wives, James W. Gore and wife, Sandra, of Pea Ridge, John F. Gore and wife, Connie, of Bentonville; and daughter, Annette I. Gore and fiance, Terry McCauley. of Rogers, Ark.; seven grandchildren, Mindy Ellington and husband, Nathan, of Bella Vista, Ark., John F. Gore and wife, Hillary, of Longmeadow, Mass., Keri Johnson and husband, Eddie, of St. Louis. Mo., Steven Cauthren and wife, Alexis, of Bentonville, Ark., Tiffany Chambliss and husband, Scott, of Cave Springs, Ark., Brandon J. Gore of Phoenix, Ariz., Lindsay L. LaCaze and husband, Dallas, of Cassville, Mo.; and 18 great-grandchildren, Lance Ellington. Jackson Ellington, Katelyn Ellington, Graelen Gore, Isaiah Johnson, Leah Johnsan, Elijah Johnson, Jake Johnson, Josiah Cauthren, Lilly Cauthren, Evan Cauthren, Kelsey Chambliss, Hannah Chambliss, Bannon Chambliss, Zoe LaCaze, Andie Kate LaGaze, Asa LaCaze and Eden LaCaze.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at St. Theodore's Episcopal Church in Bella Vista with the Rev. Ken Parks officiating. Interment will be in St. Theodore's Columbarium.
