Dois M. Kennedy was born April 14, 1934, in Quitman, Arkansas, the ninth of nine children. His parents were Luster Kennedy and Lula Edwards Kennedy. He grew up in this small community and was inspired by a high school Sunday School teacher, Harold Wilson, to enter the ministry when he was 18 years of age. Harold also became a minister in the United Methodist Church and lived his last years at the Methodist Nursing Home in Fort Smith where Dois visited him regularly.

Dois graduated from Hendrix and Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and served churches in the Texas area while in seminary.

Upon graduating from Perkins he pastored churches at Bethel Church, Jacksonville, AR; Amboy Church, North Little Rock; and Batesville First Methodist, Batesville, Arkansas before becoming pastor at Goddard United Methodist in Fort Smith where he served for 21 years. He retired in June, 2004.

Dois served on committees in the North Arkansas Conference. While serving at Goddard, they received the Large Church of the Year Award in 1995 and 1996. He received the Harry Denman Award for Evangelism. He enjoyed visitation with members of the church, homebound members, hospitals, and nursing homes. His passion was serving.

He was very active in the communities where he served, which included Chaplain for Area Agency on Aging Hospice Program, Aids Support Group, Community Rescue Mission, Board of Advisory Trustees at Sparks Hospital in Fort Smith and Fort Smith Police Department Care Team.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, four children Cindy Kennedy of Waterville, MN, Steve Kennedy of Las Vegas, NV, Chris Kennedy of Whitesboro, TX and Laura McCoy of Whitesboro, TX, three stepchildren, Melissa Chitwood of Van Buren, AR, Kevin Chitwood of Van Buren, AR and Tim Chitwood of Fayetteville, AR, one brother Junior Kennedy of Jacksonville, AR, 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and he blessed our lives.

Pallbearers were Steve Kennedy, Chris Kennedy, Kevin Chitwood, Tim Chitwood, Terry Jennings and John Bernardo. Honorary pallbearers will be all United Methodist Ministers.
