DICKSON, Ernest - Ernest Dickson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Dickson, died last Thursday night at midnight in the hospital at Austin, Texas, the result of a sudden attack of pneumonia and peritonitis. Ernest played with the University of Arkansas in their game the previous Friday with the University of Oklahoma at Norman and it is supposed that he must have received some internal injury that left him an easy victim to pneumonia. At first it was supposed that the illness would be but temporary and he warned his teammates against notifying his parents, fearing to needlessly alarm them. The ravages of the disease was rapid and his sister, Miss Gertrude, arrived in Austin only the day of his death. The body arrived here Saturday night on the Cannon Ball, accompanied by his sisters, Mrs. Eva Boogher of Vernon, Texas and Miss Grtrude of this city. Funeral services were held at the home, four miles west of Rogers, Sunday afternoon at half-past one o'clock. A special train was run from Fayetteville for the accommodation of the two hundred or more University students and members of the faculty who were anxious to pay their last sad tribute to the memory of the deceased, who was one of the most popular young men in school. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Peter Carnahan, assisted by Rev. Kilbourn of Rogers and President Tillman of the University of Arkansas. Had Ernest lived until December 30th he would have been twenty-one years old. He was born at the home place and had lived there and in Rogers all of his life. After several years at the Academy here and in the Academy at Bentonville, he entered the University and this was his third year. Owing to his skill as an athlete he at once took high rank among the men of the school and was one of the football stars. Last summer he played on the local ball team and although it was his first year was very successful. Jewel Dickson, oldest brother of the deceased, was unable to get here until Monday morning so the interment was deferred until Monday in the Bentonville cemetery. Out of respect to the deceased the football game scheduled for Saturday between the University of Arkansas and Drury College was abandoned.
