RICE, Kate PUCKETT - Mrs. Kate Rice, wife of Dr. R.S. Rice, died at midnight Sunday night after a very brief attack of typhoid fever, at her home on South Second street. It was the third visit of the Angel of Death in that neighborhood within less than a week. Few deaths, at least from illness, have been such a surprise and shock to our people. Although she had been complaining of a cold for some time and had not been feeling well, Mrs. Rice sang in the choir at the Baptist church just the previous Sunday and Monday visited her neighbor, Mrs. Meeks, who was lying at the point of death. Upon her return home she went to bed and the ravages of the disease were rapid. Saturday she sank into a stupor and it was reported that she was dying, this being the first intimation to most of our citizens that she was ill. She rallied and was conscious a short time but soon relapsed into an unconscious condition and remained so until the end came last Sunday night. Funeral services were held at the residence Monday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. Jordan and Rev. Holloway of Bentonville, assisted by Rev. Bates of the M.E. church, South and Rev. Dillon of the Christian church. Numerous relatives were present from Bentonville and other parts of the country. Misses Pearl and Grace Rice, daughters of Dr. Rice, who have been attending Central College at Conway, arrived home Sunday morning. Dr. Clint Rice of Gentry, was called here to assist in the case and Dr. Carl Puckett of Pryor Creek, was also here at the funeral. Kate Puckett was born near Rogers August 23, 1878 and had lived here all her life, being one of the best known young ladies in the Baptist church of this city. She was decidedly popular among both old and young and possessed many charming qualities that had endeared her to a large circle of friends. She was married a little over a year ago, Nov. 13, 1905 to Dr. Rice, whose first wife had been a sister of the deceased. Her married life, although of so brief a span, had been very happy, and the sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved husband. Mrs. Rice was a sister of John W, Joe and Hugh Puckett, all of this city, and has numerous other relatives in the community.
