OWEN, Walter S. - Dr. Walter S. Owen died Sunday morning at 6:30 o'clock at his home, corner Fourth and Elm Streets. Dr. Owen and wife came here from Roswell, New Mexico about six weeks ago and were joined here by relatives of both. Dr. Owen had been growing steadily weaker all the time and his death had been daily expected for several weeks. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the M.E. church, South and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Bates. The local order of the I.O.O.F. attended in a body and conducted services at the cemetery. Dr. Owen was a former Rogers boy and also lived a number of years at War Eagle, where he taught school before entering Rogers Academy here. From Rogers he went to Oklahoma where he finished his studies and began the practice of medicine. First locating at Porum he afterwards went to Muskogee and it was there he contracted the tubercular trouble that caused his death. He spent some time in New Mexico but grew worse and it was then they decided to return to Rogers. The following obituary was prepared by Rev. Bates: Dr. Walter Owen was born in Garland County, Arkansas July 25th, 1879. He was the son of Dr. Jas. P. and Anna E. Owen, and was educated at Bacone Baptist college in 1899 and graduated in medicine from the University of Louisville, Ky. in 1907 and located at Muskogee, Okla. He was County Physician and County Superintendent of Health for Muskogee county. He was happily married to Miss Clara Carr of Rogers January 10th, 1906. This union was exceedingly congenial. His beautiful wife encouraged his work and was a stimulant to his ambitions. She was devoted as only a heart-mate can be during his long sickness and was a great comfort and joy to him when he came to the end. He leaves behind a mother, three sisters, Mrs. W.J. Crump of Muskogee, Okla.; Mrs. W.D. Atkins of Summer, Okla.; Mrs. G.H. Spears of Mt. Ida, Ark.; and a brother, Hon. Thos. H. Owen of Muskogee. Dr. Owen was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South at Muskogee, Okla. in 1899 and lived a christian life until his death. He was in every way a gentleman, always courteous, kind and considerate. He was a man of ability. He gave promise of making an enviable record in his high and wise-chosen profession and gave special promise as a surgeon. Last September, in the very midst of hope, he broke down in health and it developed he had contracted a tubercular trouble. During the months that followed he made a heroic effort to ward off the disease, but all in vain. Thus did a faithful husband, a devoted son and brother, and a true christian pass away.
