NIXON, George W. –George W. Nixon was born at Ozark, Franklin County, Arkansas. He was the son of Johnny E. and Nancy E. (Keese) Nixon. George was born July 12, 1840. His father was a farmer by occupation and was born in 1804 in Kentucky. His mother was born in South Carolina. They were married in Middle Tennessee and in 1835 came to Franklin County, Arkansas, where they purchased 500 acres of land. They were members of the Primitive Baptist Church, in which the father had been a deacon for fifty years. George W. Nixon’s grandfather was a soldier in the War of 1812 and died in 1864 at the advanced age of 98 years. His father has been killed in 1776 while serving in the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War. Uncle George W. Nixon died on October 24, 1934 at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 12 days. (It is believed he was the last surviving veteran of the Battle of Prairie Grove) He was converted in September 1860 and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was a faithful member until his death. He enlisted in the Confederate army in 1861. with men from Franklin and Crawford Counties and was enrolled in Co. A of Brook’s Battalion, Carroll’s Brigade at Arbuckle, Indian Territory. After the war, on February 20, 1872, he was united in marriage with Mary Frances Simpson, who preceded him in death on November 20, 1920. To their union were born three children: Jim C., Stella and Ed Nixon., who survived him. He was also survived by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. George W. Nixon lived in Prairie Grove for more than forty years and after serving four years in the Confederate army was honorably discharged at the close of the war. George was a brother of John Nixon, who was the grandfather of Richard M. Nixon who served as Vice-President and President of the United States.

George Washington Nixon of Prairie Grove, Arkansas was born July 12, 1840 in Franklin County, Arkansas, the son of John Coffee Nixon of Kentucky and his wife Nancy Keys. He was educated at Pleasant Hill, Franklin County, Arkansas, was a farmer, Democrat, Cumberland Presbyterian and a Mason. He joined the First State Troops as a Corporal in Company A, R.D. Carroll’s Regiment and Brigade. Reorganized and joined the Confederate Service. Privet Company Col. R.D. Carroll’s, then Cooper’s Brigade, Walter Martin Company, then continued in the service to the close of the war and never surrendered. On April 20, 1972 he married Mary Frances Simpson, daughter of Jack and Terry Simpson who lived on Cove Creek, Arkansas. Their children are: Virgil Nixon (deceased), J.S. Nixon married Miss Maud Barron, Mrs. Estella (Walter) Edmiston and E.C. Nixon married Widow Golden.

By Mabel Fern Francis – The dates for the Annual Confederate Reunion this year are July 31 and August 1. The United Daughters of Confederacy and the Prairie Grove Camp of Confederate Veterans No. 384 with Comrade George Nixon, aged 90, meet for the Thirty-third reunion. The enrollment for the original Camp was one hundred – this year only one of the Charter members will be present. The reunion will be held in the native park, where the Battle of Prairie Grove was fought December 7, 1862. Six soldiers who were in the Battle will be here this year, and they are Hight Brewster of Cove Creek, Dick Morrow of Lincoln, John Russell of Cane Hill, Walter Parks of Cincinnati and Henry Pyeatt of Lincoln. (George Nixon being the sixth) Their ages vary from 85 to 92 years.

Prairie Grove, Oct. 25 – George Nixon, 94, one of the few surviving Confederate veterans, died at his home at Prairie Grove Wednesday night. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. E.E. Stevenson of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. T.P. Harrison of Fayetteville and Rev. F.A. Bell, pastor of the Cumberland Church. Burial services were in charge of the Masonic Lodge No. 436. Pallbearers were Sons of Confederate Veterans and members of the lodge: J.O. Bain, R.W. Magruder, Fred Harrison, J.E. Maupin, William Campbell and W.F. Bell. Music was by a choir composed of Daughters of the Confederacy with accompaniment by Mrs. J.C. Parks. A solo was sung by I.C. Lee. Mr. Nixon is survived by two sons, Jim of Prairie Grove and Ed and one daughter, Mrs. Lee Moss, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

G.W. Nixon Slightly Injured by Lightening – G.W. Nixon (Uncle George) was slightly injured and his granddaughter, Fay Nixon, knocked unconscious when lightening struck near his home Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Nixon was standing at the lot gate and Fay was near the garden gate some 60 feet away when the bolt struck a tree and passed to the house on the clothes line, then through the house and out on the light wire. The clothes were burned from the back of the child and Mr. Nixon’s face was scratched by splinters from the gate. Several people in the community were slightly shocked by the terrific bolt.

Mrs. J.S. Nixon and two children of Tulsa, Oklahoma are spending a short vacation with G.W. Nixon. (Another item from same newspaper) G.W. Nixon enjoyed a car ride to Cane Hill and Lincoln last Thursday in company with Dr. J.H. Brewster.

State of Arkansas Confederate Pension Archives

George W. Nixon filed Veteran Application #26626 with the Confederate Pension Board of Washington County for a Confederate pension and it was received as allowed August 1924 at the State, citing service with the Arkansas cavalry from 1861 thru 1865. Mr. Nixon died October 24, 1934.
