U. S. Garner Passes Away
By Frankie Thompson

Ulysses Sylvester Garner, son of the late Frank and Elizabeth Garner was born in Bradford County, Tennessee, May 4, 1867 and passed away at his home in Oxford July 5, 1958 at the age of 91 years, 2 months and 1 day.

He was married to Martha J. Pearson near Oxford June 14, 1891.

They became the parents of ten children, four boys and six daughters, all of whom, together with his companion of the home survive him.

The children in sequence of their ages are: Mrs. Artie Guthrie of Oxford, Dawson Garner, Tahlequah, Okla., Hubert Garner, Rogers, Mrs. Hubert Simmons (Mabel), Searcy, Roosevelt Garner, Batesville, Mrs. Elsie Rowden of the parental home at Oxford, Howard Garner, Drumright, Okla., Mrs. Gregory Rowden (Earlene), Evansville, Ind., Mrs. Verl Walker (Wilma), Crossville, Ill., and Mrs. Gordon Clifton (Merle), of Buchanan, Va. Also surviving him are 23 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. One grandchild and two great-great-grandchildren preceded him in death. Other survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Garner had been a member of the Church of Christ for 73 years and was ever faithful in his Christian duties to his family, his church and to his fellowman.

While in active health Mr. Garner was ever alert in all civic affairs, was a loyal and patriotic citizen and a good neighbor and friend. His passing will create an irreplaceable vacancy in his home, his church, and his community.

Memorial services for the deceased were held at the Oxford Church of Christ Sunday afternoon, July 6 with Elder T. H. Sherrell of Newport officiating. Bethel Cooper of Salem conducted the song services. The church was crowded to capacity while many stood outside. This together with the gorgeous floral offering attested to the esteem in which he was held by all who knew him.

Following the services, burial was made in the Oxford Cemetery by Crouch Funeral Service of Batesville. Serving as casket bearers were grandsons, Lamar Kerr, Garner Stroud, Morris Walker, Carroll Rowden, Darrow Garner, Jack Garner, Jimmy Garner and Joe K. Garner.
