Calico Rock Progress, Calico Rock, Arkansas, August 9, 1935, issue:

Accident is Fatal to Arch B. Garner

Mr. Arch B. Garner, one of the community's most widely known citizens, died at his home in the east part of Calico Rock last Wednesday morning about 9:30 o'clock, a very short while after he sustained a broken neck in a fall from a load of hay. He and Floyd Smith had just finished loading the hay and were driving to the barn, when Mr. Garner suddenly fell head first to the ground. He was removed to his home a short distance away, passing away only a few moments afterwards.

Mr. Garner was born near Shelbyville, Tenn., August 3, 1860, having reached his 75th birthday last Saturday. He came to Arkansas as a mere lad, the family locating near Oxford. He was married in 1886 to Miss Susan Rebecca Pearson of near Oxford. Thirteen children were born to this union, nine of whom survive. Mr. Garner was for several years engaged at farming and during later years was in the sawmill business. He moved to Calico Rock 32 years ago and entered the mercantile business in partnership with his brother, J. T. Garner. He retired from business a few years ago and since then has devoted his time to the management of his farm here.

Mr. Garner's life was marked by unusual activity, as he was a tireless worker in every under taking, carrying on to the very last with the same zeal and determination that were with him in earlier life. His varied business connections throughout the years brought him in contact with people from all over this and adjoining counties. His life followed closely the tenets of the Golden Rule, being ever ready to lend a helping hand to the needy or any other worthy cause. He lived a consistent and Christian life till the end. He united with the Christian Church more that fifty years ago and was a regular attendant at religious services. The sudden death of this good citizen came as a shock to the entire community.

Besides his faithful wife, deceased is survived by four sons and five daughters as follows: Theodore, Edlon and Hale Garner of Calico Rock and Sherman Garner of Springfield, Mo.; Mrs. Novella Billingsley and Mrs. Fred Beach of Franklin, Mrs. W. C. Woody, Mrs. Joe E. Matthews and Mrs. O. E. Sanders of Calico Rock. Also surviving are two brothers, J. R. Garner of Calico Rock and U. S. Garner of Newburg; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Funeral services, held at the Christian Church at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, were conducted by the pastor, Eld. T. H. Sherrill, who paid a beautiful tribute to the life and memory of the deceased, before a large gathering of relatives and friends.

Interment was in Rose Lawn cemetery.
