Sallie PLUNKETT

Plunkett Cemetery
Calhoun County,
Arkansas

January 13, 1873 - December 25, 1966

Funeral services were held Monday at Proctor's Chapel with burial at the Plunkett family cemetery south of Locust Bayou for Mrs. Sallie Plunkett who died Christmas Day. She was the widow of the late Dr. C. M. Plunkett, one of South Arkansas' most colorful "horseback" doctors, who before his death in 1956 at the age of 88 had delivered more than 3,000 babies in their homes. It wasn't that he did not want a car or the use of a hospital. There were none. He purchased one of the first cars in this area in 1912, which was of little use to him because of bad roads. Many times he would start out in his car to answer calls, get stuck, and have to walk, or come back and get his horse named "Pompeii" It is recalled that people would come in buggies and wagons from miles around to watch him learn how to drive his new horseless carriage. He prepared a place in his barn to house it. Intrigued onlookers would stand at a safe distance outside the barnyard fence to watch him drive around and around the barn. It is told authentically that at first he would lock all the gates before he would crank up the engine just in case it got away from him. So, with the passing of Mrs. Plunkett, a doctor's wife, another chapter of pioneer life is closed. It was her grandparents, named Elliott, who were the first family to settle, shortly after the turn of the 19th century, in the community south of Camden known as Elliott for which family it was named. Here she was born 94 years ago and lived all her life until hospitalized in 1957 as a result of a broken hip. She was a member of the Old Methodist Church which is now the Fairview Methodist Church. Misses Sallie and the Doctor, as they were affectionately called, were childless, yet every Christmas for years they sponsored a large Christmas tree in the community church, and bought fruit, candy and a present for every child. So for the many grown-up children, who remember their generosity, it is altogether fitting and proper that she should depart from this earth on the most beloved of days--Christmas Day.
