Age 82, born in Union County AR, to Asa Daniel Nathanial Bates and Velma Victoria Wilson; entered into the Army January 22, 1943; fought on the beaches of Normandy in July of 1943 as a member of the 134th Infantry of the 35th Division. There he became a P. O. W. after surviving a near fatal wound. Upon release and recovery he was given an honorable discharge in June 1945 as a Purple Heart recipient, among other decorations; a member of Mt. Union Baptist Church; the Golden Agers Group at Mt. Union Baptist; and the DAV Chapter 47; worked as a bottler for Coca-Cola for 16 years and then worked for the County until his retirement.

Preceded in death by parents, son Ernest Ray Bates, daughter Sharon Lee, and youngest son Herbert Glenn "Herbie" Bates, a brother, Thomas Holden, and sisters; Laura Holden, Florence Lively, Velma Stewart, Pauline Boyett and Irene Scharbor.

Survived by his wife of 60 years, Ernestine Thurlkill Bates of El Dorado, daughter Mary Rea and her husband, Rodney of Warren, sister Cora Mae Hatcher of Smackover, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and his constant canine companion, Cricket.
