J.M. Beard, one of the most widely-known citizens of this section, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.T. Pinkston, Sunday morning after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Beard was 77 years old, a native of Marshall county, Tennessee. He was reared as a youth in Texas and came to Benton county 60 years ago. He was married to Miss Lucinda Hamby, daughter of another pioneer of the county, near Lowell, who died February 27th of this year. To them were born six children: Dr. J.M. Beard of Seminole, Okla.; Mrs. E.T. Pinkston, Rogers, Ark.; Dr. David A. Beard, Tulsa, Okla.; Jasper Beard, Lowell, Ark.; Leroy of Southern Arkansas and Mrs. Adena Henry of Joplin, Mo. All but one of the children were here for the funeral service which was held Monday at Goad's Springs near Lowell. Reverend Floyd Tillman, a former pastor of the Baptist church of Lowell, preached the sermon. Mr. Beard was engaged in the mercantile business with his son, J.M. Beard for many years at Lowell, south of Rogers, retiring in 1912 when he moved to Rogers. He was elected to the state legislature in 1913 and again in 1919. He was an advocate of the Alexander road law and worked consistently for the building of roads in Arkansas. He was a life long member of the Baptist church and a teacher of music by the old time method known as the "four square" music. Until recent illness prevented Mr. Beard was present at all community singing, using the old song books and preceding the song by the "do-re-mi" drill. Besides his own children he reared a grandson, Marshall Beard of Joplin, Mo. and there are three other grandchildren, Aubrey, Opal and Roland Pinkston, all of Dallas, Texas.
