{from Hiwasse} Our community was thrown into a state of sorrow and sadness by the passing away of one of our oldest and most respected citizens, H.H. Hathaway, which occurred on Sunday, June 29th, 1930. He had been in poor health for some time and had endured his sickness with much patience. He was born in Dade County, Mo., was 85 years of age and so far as we can learn was the oldest citizen in this community. He was a man of noble virtues, upright, honest and law-abiding, and a true and sincere Christian in every sense of the word. In his passing away his wife has lost a devoted husband and his children a kind and loving father and the community a loyal and worthy citizen. He is survived by his widow and five children. Funeral services were held for him Monday afternoon at Mount Pleasant cemetery and were conducted by Rev. R.S. Hayden of Bentonville.

Henry H. Hathaway, retired physician and former resident of Bentonville, died at his home west of Hiwasse early Monday morning, June 30, 1930 at the age of 85 years. Up until two weeks ago he had been in good health for a man of his age, when it is thought he suffered a stroke of paralysis. He began to sink immediately and his death was not wholly unexpected. A stroke three years ago did not seem to injure him physically or mentally. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. R.S. Hayden of Bentonville, were held at four o'clock Monday afternoon in the presence of a large number of old friends and relatives. Burial was made in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near his home. Mr. Hathaway was born near Greenfield, Dade County, Mo. April 19, 1845. He moved with his parents to Texas and at the outbreak of the Civil War he joined the Confederate army where he served four years. At the close of the war he entered a medical college in St. Louis where he graduated. He practiced medicine in Texas for 15 years. Giving up his profession he moved to Bentonville in 1911 and four years later bought the farm near Hiwasse where he has since lived. Mr. Hathaway was twice married: his first wife, whom he married in 1870, died in Texas in 1891, Following her death he later wedded Miss Alice Davenport who survives him. Two sons also survive, John Hathaway, manager of the D & H Store of Bentonville; and Joe Hathaway of the home, also by three daughters, Mrs. Elbert Hunter, Stevensville, Texas; Mrs. L.L. Roberts, Stinnett, Texas and Mrs. Henry Sheffield of Dallas.

HATHAWAY, Alice DAVENPORT -Alice Davenport was born in Mobile, Alabama March 17, 1850, died at Paris, Texas October 3, 1930, aged eighty years, six months and seventeen days. She lived at Mobile, Alabama and Louisville, Kentucky until about the year 1880 when she went to Paris, Texas to make her home. There she met and was united in marriage with Henry Helm Hathaway in the year 1891. She became as a mother to his seven motherless children, loving them and caring for them as if they were her own and receiving from them the same loving devotion as if they had been born to her. Coming to Arkansas in 1911 they located at Bentonville and in January 1915 they moved to the farm near Hiwasse which was her home until her death. On Friday, September 26th she went to Paris, Texas for a short visit with her only living sister, Mrs. Julia Keel. There she was taken suddenly ill and her sons were notified of her illness Wednesday evening. John, being confined to his bed, was unable to go to her bedside. Joe, of Hiwasse, went and arrived at his mother's bedside when death claimed her. Short funeral services were held at Paris at the Manton Fry funeral home, after which the body was brought to Hiwasse. Early in life she united with the M.E. Church, South and lived the life of a consecrated Christian. She loved the church and was never absent from its services if it were possible for her to be there. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Julia Keel, Paris, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Sallie Sheffield, Dallas, Texas, who was present at the funeral obsequies and Mrs. Pearl Hunter of Stephenville, Texas; two sons, John of Bentonville and Joe of the home; four nieces and one nephew and a host of friends who are saddened by the passing of this good, Christian woman. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Hiwasse Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. R.S. Hayden, pastor of the M.E. Church of Bentonville, after which her body, followed by a concourse of friends, was laid to rest under a multitude of flowers in the Mount Pleasant cemetery beside that of her husband who preceded her in death just three months and two days.
