SUTHERLAND, James W. - James W. Sutherland died Friday, January 22 at his home one and one-half miles west of Oakley's Chapel, at the age of 84 years, 5 months and three days. Mr. Sutherland had been in poor health for several years but the immediate cause of his death was pneumonia and he had been ill for about two weeks. Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon at 2:30 and were conducted by Rev. Weaver of the Oakley's Chapel church. Burial was at Oakley's Chapel cemetery. Mr. Sutherland was born at Danville, Ky. August 19, 1830. He served in the Civil War as Orderly Sergeant in Co. F, 9th Ind. Cavalry. After the war he practiced medicine at Indianapolis, Ind., going to Roswell, N.M. in 1880. In 1903 he moved to Bradford City, Va., moving to Benton county in 1909. He is survived by his wife and six children, two of whom are at home, Jas. W Sutherland, Jr. and Miss Alice. During his residence in the Oakley's Chapel neighborhood the deceased made many warm friends and his death is a great sorrow to all of them. He was a man of many excellent qualities and a splendid citizen and neighbor.
