Born May 13, 1917 in Locust Bayou, Arkansas, he was the son of Samuel Haywood and Maggie Proffit Higgs. Herman retired as a Captain with the El Dorado Police Department after 27 years’ service. He then was employed by the U. S. Marshal Service having served 24 years before retirement. He was a member of West Side Baptist Church.

He served his country in the U. S. Army from June, 1941 until October 1945 during which he was a Prisoner of War from December 1944 until May 1945.

Preceding him in death along with his parents were his wife, Virginia Higgs; brothers, Haywood, Wilton, P. D. and Aubry Higgs along with a sister, Effie.

Survivors include his daughter, Charlotte Washington (Danny) of El Dorado, two grandchildren, Wade Washington (Rendi), and Trichel Grisham; four great-grandchildren, Zachary Washington (Heather) and Zayne Grisham, Sydney Grisham and Colt Huchingson Threadgill along with three great-great grandchildren; Madelynn Burns, Rheannin Burns, Ryker Burns and all of Hot Springs, AR.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 8, 2021 at Young’s Funeral Directors.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at West Side Baptist Church with Rev. Gerald Perry and Rev. Sam Higgs officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery near Camden under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.

CDC regulations are to be followed by wearing mask and practicing social distancing.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
