John Benjamin Matthews, 85, a former resident of Norphlet, died early Tuesday in a Camden hospital after a short illness. He was born Dec. 28, 1881 in Ebenezer community, the son of Peter Franklin and Sally Paralee McGown Matthews. Mr. Matthews leaves a sister, Mrs. J. E. Perdue of Norphlet, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Young's with the Rev. Zane Chessar, the Rev. S. B. Mann and the Rev. James Ford officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Kennedy, Tim Anderson, Joe Murphy, Homer Murphy, Ira Murphy and Billy Murphy. Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Norphlet will be honorary pallbearers. (The El Dorado Times - June 19, 1965)
