Frank Lewis Tate, age 93, a long-time resident of Camden, died peacefully Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at the John R. Williamson Hospice House in El Dorado. Born on June 3, 1920 in Ouachita County, Arkansas, he was the oldest son of Lewis A. Tate and Malinda Keith Tate Williams.
Frank was preceded in death by his mother and father, named above, his brother, Vernon Gene Tate, his grandson, Michael Dwayne Farrar and his step-daughter, Zelda Rogers Ferguson.
Surviving Frank is his wife of 65 years, Nell Petty Tate of El Dorado, one son, Mike L. Tate and wife Judy, of Dallas, and four daughters, Linda Wilson and husband Benny, of El Dorado, Karen Tate and husband David McDougall, of Hot Springs, Debbie Hutton and husband Bill, of Springdale, and Tammy Rankin and husband, Terry of Springdale. Also surviving Frank are 10 grandchildren, 12 great -grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren; step son-in-law, Sonny Ferguson.
He belonged to a pioneer Ouachita County family and was the grandson of County Judge W. F. Tate. Frank lived most of his life in and around Camden, AR and he attended grade school in Camden, AR and in Kilgore, TX and attended high school at Fairview High School in Camden. He was a 1937 FHS graduate. He attended college at Magnolia A & M College, now South Arkansas University.
Frank worked as a young man in the timber woods with his dad, worked as a coin collector from jukeboxes in Camden and later, worked at Hardin Radio Shop in Camden for 20 years. Other employment included South Arkansas Music, Stromberg-Carlson, General Dynamics, and Davis Machine Shop. He woefully admitted collecting one week of unemployment pay during his entire working career.
In his younger years, Frank enjoyed traveling with his wife, Nell and visited much of the United States. He and Nell also loved going to Blue-Grass Festivals. After he was unable to travel, he reawakened his passion for reading.
He and his wife moved from their home of 50 years at Fairview and moved to their daughter, Linda and Benny Wilson’s, property near El Dorado in November 2002. An avid gardener, he continued to grow tomatoes, kale, squash and okra in raised beds until his 91st year.
Visitation will be from 5-8 PM on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Proctor Funeral Home in Camden. Funeral services will be held at Proctor’s Chapel on Sunday, January 18, 2014 at 2 PM and burial will be at Bethesda Cemetery. Friends and family are welcome. The family requests memorial to the John R. Williamson Hospice House in lieu of flowers. Address of the Hospice House is 2301 Champagnolle Road, El Dorado, AR 71730. Proctor Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
