Dr. Cathryn Houston Pentecost Meyer, went to Heaven on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Cathryn Louise Houston was born on December 26, 1967, in New Bedford, MA. to Robert and Cynthia Nangle Houston, all formerly of New Bedford, MA, Greenville, MS, and all now residing in Jacksonville, AR.

She loved school, and was in the very first Gifted and Talented classes, starting in the 4th grade, and continued through 12th grade, which included Advanced Placement credits, earned in Jacksonville HS; Jacksonville, AR. Due to a military move, Cathryn graduated, with honors, from St. Joseph HS, in Greenville, MS.

Cathryn cheerfully attended Delta State University, in Cleveland, MS, and graduated, with honors, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, in 1990, and a Master’s Degree in Special Education in 1992. After teaching in the Mississippi Delta towns for several years, she pursued, & earned, her Ph. D. in Education, in Talented and Gifted studies, at the University of Southern Mississippi, in Hattiesburg, despite her first brain tumor, and surgery, in January 1998.

Cathryn graduated from USM at Hattiesburg, with her Ph.D. in education on December 15, 2000, with honors. Many of her writings, during her years at USM, were published in nationwide educational journals. Cathryn enjoyed reading and writing all her life. Cathryn also taught TG students in Jackson, MS, which ended her first 12 years of teaching. She returned to Jacksonville, AR, in January, 2002, and taught Talented and Gifted students for nearly 13 years, here.

Cathryn suffered surgery on her 2nd brain tumor, in November , 2014, and just when it finally began to shrink, in August, 2015, a 3rd brain tumor, which was inoperable, formed on the right side of her brain stem, pressing into her spinal cord. She finally had to resign from her beloved teaching career, but volunteered a few hours a week, at her beloved Pinewood Elementary School, until she could no longer function.

Cathryn was preceded in death by her grandparents, John and Winifred Matthews Nangle, of New Bedford, MA, and Ben and Evelyn Stockner Houston, of Greenville, MS, her former husband C. Allen Pentecost, of Litton, MS, her dear cousin, Alan Ross, Jr., of MS, her aunt Louise Nangle Ross of Jacksonville, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, mostly in MA and MS.

Cathryn is survived by her husband, Douglas Meyer, her daughter, Sarah Pentecost Manrriquez (Nick), her parents, Robert and Cynthia Nangle Houston, her brother, Robert Houston, Jr. (Sue Barger), her sister, Margaret Houston Bartee (Andy), her niece, Ivie Bartee, all of Jacksonville, AR, former mother-in-law, Frances Pentecost, of Litton, MS her parents-in-law, Gordon and Cheryl Meyer, of Sherwood, AR, two sisters-in-law, Amy and April of Little Rock, AR and MS, and many cousins in many states.

Cathryn was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Jacksonville, AR.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Jacksonville. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Park for the family only. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. with a eulogy at 7:00 p.m. and a Rosary to follow onTuesday, March 1, 2016 at Moore’s Jacksonville Funeral Home.
