Clarence Odell "C.O." Cagle, age 94, of Hot Springs, passed from this life on Saturday February 3, 2018. He was born on July 13, 1923, to George Oscar and Mary Lee Cunningham Cagle in Royal, Arkansas. His beloved wife of 68 years, Lorene Margaret Pennington, who preceded him in death in 2012, was joined to him in marriage on February 4, 1944. He is also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister, and a much-loved daughter, Marcelyn Renee Cagle Tate. He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Kay Cagle of Hot Springs and Marsha Ann Cagle. Odell was brought to Hot Springs as a young boy in order for his father to work on the paving of Malvern Road. He was a proud alumnus of Lakeside School, starting in its first year and graduating in the Class of 1941. That senior class went on a tremendous adventure of the time, traveling to Washington, D.C. in a school bus, staying in fire stations and churches along the way, and taking a boat trip from Norfolk, VA to Mount Vernon. They were privileged to be allowed to go on the Senate floor during the lunch recess, and he was proud to sit in the Arkansas seat of Senator Hattie Caraway. After Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) service and participation in defense work during the first part of WWII, he was inducted in 1943 into the US Navy, in which he served as a sonarman on a wooden minesweeper in the Pacific. Rejoining his wife, family, and its Pennington extension in December of 1945, he returned to Hot Springs, where he later would be fortunate in being encouraged to apply to the Reynolds Metals Company. He spent 35 years at the Jones Mills reduction plant as an industrial electrician. There were many discussions with his friends and co-workers about family, educational and career accomplishments of their children, and hopes for their futures. The majority of his hours in the "shop" were spent with his good friend Frank Allison, a fellow Lakeside alumnus. Between them, it was all about academics and the future of the institution, hoping for a respect and understanding of the history of its founding. Bro. Cagle served as Sunday School Superintendent at Oaklawn Missionary Baptist Church for several years. Along with the music (a lifetime love), he most enjoyed meeting visitors and members as they arrived for Sunday service with his "big smile" of welcome. He and his wife later became members of Meadow View Missionary Baptist Church, where they were supported and comforted in their later years. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Hot Springs with Reverend Gary V. Smith officiating, followed by private interment. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until service time on Thursday. Pallbearers will be Jerry Pennington, Perry Allison, David Lucy, Ed Skelton, Brian Wilson, and Clay Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Sulton, Dewayne Pennington, Brent Smith, Jennifer Springer, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Meadow View Missionary Baptist Church. The family expresses special thanks to his medical team and hospice caregivers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lakeside Alumni Association, Inc.; P.O. Box 21968; Hot Springs, AR 71903 or Meadow View Missionary Baptist Church.
