When James Newton Norwood was born on May 1, 1846, in Franklin, Georgia, his father, Robert, was 39 and his mother, Johanna, was 37. He had three sons and two daughters with Josey E. Slayton. He then married Nellie Crook on February 19, 1900. He died on November 5, 1917, in White, Arkansas, at the age of 71.
