Rev. George E. Butler, 87, of Memphis, TN. died on Monday April 30th, 2012 at the Memphis V.A.M.C. On August 27th, 1924 Rev. Butler was born in Camden, Arkansas. The son of John Ramsey and Sally Best Butler. He proudly served in the US Navy during World War II. Primarily touring the pacific front all the way to Japan. After the war, he attended Bethel College in McKenzie, Tennessee to prepare for his ministry in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Pastoring numerous churches in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee during the 65 + years that he preached. The past 3 years he preached at the Belmont Village Senior Assisted Living in Memphis, Tn. He also taught school as teacher and substitute and even drove school bus on several occasions. He had desire to help and be with young people. Many summers he spent at Camp Penile in Arkansas, and Camp Clark Williamson in Tennessee.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Barnhart Butler; daughter Linda Grace Butler; brother, Newton Butler; and sister, Opal Butler Langley.
Survivors include; brother J.R. Butler, of Atlanta, GA; two sisters, Juanita Butler Benson and Dr. Katie Best Butler of Camden, AR. Daughter, Peggy Butler Patterson of Huntsville, AL and son, Dr. Robert and wife Dr. Gina Butler of Germantown, TN; two grandsons, Dion McBay and wife Wendy of Wildwood, MO and Robert Butler, Jr. of Germantown, TN; three granddaughters, Delinda McBay Owens and husband Matt of Cornersville, TN, Emmie Butler and Allie Butler both of Germantown, TN; 7 great grandchildren, Cecilia McBay Turner, Desmond Owens, Courtney McBay, Lane Owens, Garrett McBay, Cody Owens, and Miranda Owens; 3 Great Great Grandchildren, Sydnee Turner, Joshua Turner, and Kali Owens.
Visitation for Rev. Butler will be at Proctor Funeral Home Friday May 4th from 6-8 pm and services will be at the Camden Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Sat. May 5th at 10 a.m.with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.
